Patch it or start over
Replacement makes sense when the problems are everywhere. Think alligator-style cracking across the whole drive, ruts where the wheels run, edges crumbling away, or low areas that hold water after every storm. A driveway that has been patched three or four times is often costing you more than a fresh start would. Past a certain point, you are paying to keep a failed surface on life support. If you have dirt or gravel and want pavement for the first time, that requires a new install from the ground up.
Handling Dalton's Subgrade
The chert-clay soils prevalent in Whitfield and nearby northwest Georgia counties have high volume change and low density. The ground can move or be softer than it looks, and asphalt only lasts as long as what it sits on. Once the old surface is out or the lot is stripped, we look at what is exposed. Soft or spongy spots get dealt with before any stone or asphalt goes down. A lot of quick-and-cheap driveways are lost here; the paving can look perfect on day one and still sag later if the soil wasn't addressed. We can't promise what we'll find until the ground is open. If we hit something that changes the plan, you'll hear about it before we keep going.

Grading for Heavy Rain
Dalton receives around 50 inches of rain in a typical year, and periodic heavy-rain events test drainage and grading. A driveway plan has to account for moving runoff away from the pavement. Grade and cross-slope are decisions we make before the paver ever shows up. We plan where the water goes once it leaves the surface: away from the pavement, away from your garage, and not into a neighbor's yard. A driveway that sheds water well barely notices a storm, while one that doesn't will show it fast with pooling, soft edges, and a base that stays wet.
Placing and Compacting the Asphalt
The hot mix has to be placed and compacted while it remains compactable, so the crew and equipment move together. A material transfer vehicle helps keep mix feeding the paver steadily. We set the paver screed to place the mat at the required width, grade, cross-slope, and thickness. A pressure distributor with a spray bar handles the spray application ahead of the mat, putting it down evenly across the surface. We then roll the hot mat in breakdown, intermediate, and finish passes. Each pass has its own job, and the last one leaves the surface smooth. Wait too long and the mix cools past the point where it can be rolled properly.
Driveway Replacement Pricing
For a full asphalt driveway replacement, expect roughly $8 to $15 per square foot. A 600-square-foot drive lands between $4,800 and $9,000, and a 1,000-square-foot drive between $8,000 and $15,000. The real number comes after we have measured and evaluated the site. What moves you within that range is mostly what is under the old pavement. A sound base costs less to bring back to grade. Soft ground, drainage fixes, or a lot of reshaping push the price up. Size and layout matter too, since a long, narrow drive with turns takes different handling than a simple rectangle.
