Cleveland's Older Driveways
Nearly half the homes in Cleveland date from the mid-century years through the late seventies. Many of these driveways serve older properties that require careful assessment before resurfacing. Because the original bases have been sitting under decades of weather and vehicle weight, we evaluate the subgrade before putting down any new asphalt. If the base is compromised, laying a new surface on top will just lead to the same cracks reappearing.
Driveway Entrance Permits
If you are building a new driveway entrance or changing an existing one, Cleveland requires written approval from the Planning Director or their designee. We confirm this approval before modifying any driveway entrance. While a basic resurfacing might not trigger this requirement, widening the approach or cutting a new entry point means we must secure the right paperwork before our crew starts digging.

Southeast Soils and Shrink-Swell Potential
Sun Belt Southeast regional soils have local shrink-swell potential. The ground under your driveway moves with moisture changes, and over time that movement stresses the base layer. When we prep a site, we account for this soil expansion and contraction. For older Cleveland homes, the original base may have been adequate decades ago, but modern vehicle weights combined with soil movement often mean the base needs to be rebuilt rather than just resurfaced.
Placement and Compaction
We use a mechanical broom to clear off debris so the new asphalt bonds properly to the base. We then place the asphalt mixture with a paver at a uniform speed, maintaining a uniform mat thickness across the entire driveway. The rolling sequence begins close behind the paver while the mat is hot. We start with breakdown rolling, perform intermediate compaction, and complete the process with finish rolling to lock the surface in.

Hot-Patch Repair Pricing
An asphalt hot-patch repair costs $2 to $5 per square foot. A full driveway installation costs more due to the base material and grading labor. Because older Cleveland driveways often require subgrade work that isn't visible from the surface, we provide a specific number only after assessing the site.

Our crew does the work, checks it, and leaves the site clean. You see everything we did.
What this typically involves:
- Correct uneven grade by grading the base, milling high spots, or placing a leveling lift where milling is not an option. [S3]
- Before an overlay, repair pavement failures, patch potholes, and thoroughly sweep debris from the surface. [S5]
What It Typically Costs
